Park-and-ride users in Guildford could be stung by a rise in fares from next month. Proposals have been drawn up to increase daily adult return fares by 10p at all sites in the borough.The services from Ladymead, Artington, the Spectrum leisure centre and Merrow are currently funded through cash raised by both the fares themselves and on-street parking charges. Under the plans, the weekly ticket price will also rise by 10% from April 5.The proposals were due to go before Surrey County Council’s local committee for Guildford on Wednesday evening for final approval.The fare increases will take place at the same time as drivers are hit by a 10% hourly increase in fares at several Guildford town centre car parks.
Michel Harper has moved closer towards his goal of bringing gambling into his Guildford nightclubs. The businessman was granted a gaming licence by the Gaming Commission at a hearing on Thursday. “It’s a huge step forward,” Mr Harper said. “It means that myself personally and the company can now operate gaming establishments anywhere with gaming centres, book-keepers and such like. “Subject to all of the permissions being granted, we hope to have the gaming centres up and running six weeks from now.”. In November 2009, Mr Harper was granted permission by Guildford Borough Council in principle to install electronic gambling machines into his Onslow Street venues.The machines have already been installed and Mr Harper hopes to have his adult gaming centres operating by the end of April. Mr Harper’s long-term goal is to open a multi-storey casino and hotel complex on the site of his existing clubs. But the council’s current policy, which was rubber-stamped at the end of 2009, prohibits the operation of casinos in Guildford.
The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile 2010 is taking place on Sunday 21 March and will be held at the University of Surrey (AP Plaza), between 10:30am and 2:30pm. The University of Surrey Student Union is teaming up with the local Guildford Samaritans charity to offer ‘Listening Skills with Samaritans’. If you’re ever told you’re a good listener, or you think you need to brush up on your listening skills, this is the training session for you. Samaritans is a charity for people of all ages who are feeling in distress, despair or loneliness. The charity operates a 24/7 listening service, through phone, email or face to face. You’ll also get an insight into the sorts of skills used by the volunteers who work with the Samaritans, and get to meet some volunteers from the Guildford branch. The University of Surrey is currently hosting an exhibition of illustrations in its Lewis Elton gallery. The exhibition will run until Thursday 22 April, entry is free, and the gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday. As part of the Children’s Book Award and Festival, this exhibition is a fabulous display of original artwork from the 6 titles shortlisted for the new Surrey Libraries' Children's Book Award and from other illustrators appearing as part of the Surrey Libraries Children's Book Festival. On display is original artwork from 5 of the shortlisted books' illustrators as well as work by artists who have run workshops in schools. The work will be shown alongside about 90 paintings and drawings created by children and based on their favourite characters in the books.
And in local celebrity news, TV fashion guru Gok Wan visited a Guildford school for his first ever body image lecture last Friday, as part of a mission to get the subject included on the national curriculum. Wan spoke to an assembly of 360 pupils at King’s College for his latest series of How to Look Good Naked, and footage filmed on the day will also be shown to Education Secretary Ed Balls. The presenter wants youngsters to be taught about body confidence as part of the Personal, Social and Health Education syllabus to try to counteract the pressures of conforming to the perfect body image pervaded in the media. Wan has already handed over a petition with more than 45,000 signatures supporting his curriculum proposal to Mr Balls.
Guildford could soon have a new annual beer festival showcasing a range of ales and live music. An application has been submitted by Guildford Cricket Club to hold a two-day event at the Woodbridge Road sports ground. Commercial manager Chad Murrin said the club had some exciting plans for the event, which it aims to stage in June, July or August.
The proposal added that any live music would be performed inside a tent and would not be amplified. A spokesman for CAMRA said he was pleased the cricket club was hoping to host a beer festival. He said: “Events like these introduce many new people to the delights of real ale.”
For the first time, a vote is being held by the Student’s Union to select a delegation to send to the NUS national conference. Make sure you vote between Nick Entwistle, Sam Bull and Oliver Deed at vote.ussu.co.uk.
Don’t forget that nominations for positions in the students union close at midday on Monday March 1st. Any student can run for the positions of President, Vice President for Education, Vice President for Welfare, Vice President for Societies and Individual Development, and Vice President for Sport and Recreation. If you still want to apply, make sure you download an application pack from the union website or collect one from the union reception. Voting commences takes place between 15th and 26th March, with announcements being held on 26th.

Visitors to Guildford will have to pay to use some of the town's most popular car parks during the evening from April. The borough council's executive committee has approved recommendations made by parking managers to charge motorists a one-off £1 fee. It will affect people using car parks including Bedford Road, Mary Road, Millbrook and Portsmouth Road between the hours of 6pm and 10pm from Monday to Saturday. The move is expected to net the council an extra £160, 000 a year. However, business leaders in the town warned that the introduction of the charge was likely to affect retailers and nightspots.
